Dana Point, Orange County
Dana Point is named for Richard Henry Dana Jr., who visited the cove as a sailor in 1835 and described it in Two Years Before the Mast as the only romantic spot on the coast. The harbor below the headlands was dedicated in 1971. Gray whales pass close to shore each winter, and the town has celebrated them with a festival each March for more than fifty years.
